Hosted Yellowstone Trip 2012 8/22/12
So today was our first official day of fishing and most of us decided to head towards the Northeast entrance and fish the Round Prairie of Soda Butte. A few folks went up into Pebble Creek and others went down to the confluence of the two. Dick and Dave decided to go to head down to Slough Creek to try their hand at those somewhat weary fish.
The fish up at Soda Butte were very eager and looking up. Beetles were the ticket early and it switched over to Gray drakes. Many fish were caught but few exceeded the 12″ range. Chris worked his way up Pebble and got into some beautiful cutbows, and caught 100% off of dries.
His money maker was an orange ant. Ken D stepped into a hole and while I was talking to Ken E and Scott, proceeded to catch 4 fish while we watched.
Chuck, Tom, and Peter all handed out some sore lips themselves. All the water that we fished was crystal clear and a good drift was the key.
After a short lunch break most of the group decided to go back to Soda Butte and finish the day down there. Myself, Tom , and Peter went a little further up the river but found less activity. The water was gorgeous but it only turned out one fish and one strike.
As we returned home we got similar results from the others that went on their own. Great in the morning, slow in the afternoon.. Dick got into some great fish on the lower Slough in the am, but like everyone else the pace drop off drastically.
On our way back into town we ran into the Bighorn Sheep doing the tight rope on the cliffs over Gardiner. Ken and Scott did a little sight seeing and made their way up to the Beartooth Pass and found snow and views that seemed to go forever.
All in all in all it was a great day and we ended it with Chicken Parmigiano that really hit the spot. Check back tomorrow to see how the first day of Float Tips went, and also a group of us will go into 3nd Meadow of Slough Creek for the first time this year.
