Fly Suggestions:

White, Black and Chartreuse Streamers, Wiggle Minnow, Black and Blue poppers.

General Information:

The blooming of the bradford pear trees marks the Smallmouth Bass spawn and the beginning of the season. Right now, the fish are making every effort to fatten up for the spawn.  While the water levels and clarity are ideal, the temperatures are currently a little cold.   Until this roller coaster of a seasonal transition flattens out, the fishing will be amazing during warm spells and slow during cold spells.  Now is a good time to dust of your gear and see what needs replacing.  Feel free to give us a call or come see us at one of the CWO shops if you need help or advice.

One of the best times of the year to catch big smallmouth is here.  Don’t miss out on the fun.

Smallmouth Bass on Nolichucky River – May 3, 2012

Stream Report:

UPDATED EVERY FRIDAY May 4, 2012

WATER CONDITIONS:

Nolichucky is at a good flow and warming up.

French Broad River is slightly off color but fishable and should be perfect this weekend .  Visibility is approximately 2′.

Pigeon River

FLY SUGGESTIONS:  Crawfish Patterns, Clousers, Poppers, Green and Black Streamers.

GENERAL INFORMATION:  The Nolichucky River offers diverse fishing and some beautiful scenery all within an hour of Asheville.  The gorge section fishes great and is easier to move around on when water level is under 1800 cfs.  Like any gorge, the getting around can be tough on foot but well worth the hike.  This section has class IV rapids with lots of fishy holes, so bring a 9′  5 or 6 wt. rod, heavy flies and respect for the white water.

If you float the river, try the section from the bottom of the gorge at Chestoa down river 4 miles to Erwin, TN.  This section offers great Smallmouth fly fishing opportunities; as well as, the ability to fish for the elusive Musky and the occasional Trout.   If you don’t have access to a vessel, CWO offers guided float trips for Smallmouth Bass and Trout on several rivers.  The Nolichucky is one of those rivers that offers a chance at more than one species of fish.  This is a Smallmouth Bass fishing report, but  nice rainbows can be caught on the Chestoa section.

Smallmouth Bass on French Broad River – April 27, 2012

Stream Report for Asheville and WNC:

UPDATED EVERY FRIDAY:  April 2012

WATER CONDITIONS:  French Broad River was clearing up, but since the recent heavy rain, expect chocolate milk for at least a couple days.

FLY SUGGESTIONS:  Crawfish Patterns, Clousers, Poppers, Green and Black Streamers.

GENERAL INFORMATION: Smallmouth Bass can often be found in sections of river where plenty of underwater structure is present.   Rocks, trees, bridge pilings etc.  are fishy locations to focus on.  Depending on temperatures, fish will fluctuate between deep pools and shallow water.  Work the seams and deep pools with plenty of weight to get your flies down.  The faster the current, the more weight you’ll need to get your rig down fast.  In the warmer temperatures, try throwing poppers to the banks and under over-hanging tree branches.

PROJECTED CONDITIONS:  Rising temperatures as the week progresses will turn fishing back on in the mornings.  Typical scattered showers are in the forecast.  As soon as the water clears to 2′ visibility, the green light is back on and fishing should be at it’s annual climax!
GEAR SUGGESTIONS:

Rod: 8’6”–9’ 6wt, Fast Action comparable to Scott “S” Series rods.

Leader: 9-12’ 3x-5x Florocarbon.  Option: Blue Sky furled leader.
