Late Spring on the Pigeon 225x300 Delayed Harvest Stream Report 5 28 12

Late Spring on the Pigeon

Hatches: Tan Caddis, Yellow Sallies

Fly Suggestions:  Tan Elk Hair Caddis, Little Yellow Stone, Clown Shoe Sally, White or Olive Wooly Bugger, Brown Girdle Bug

General Information: Well, we’ve had a good run on the Delayed Harvest waters, beginning last October and barely slowing down through the exceptionally mild winter. But all good things must come to an end [at least for a few months], and so it is with the DH streams. This Saturday, 6-2 is “opening day” for catch and keep on the streams that have been catch and release only for the past 8 months. If you choose to fish on Saturday remember it’s kids under the age of 16 years until noon, no exceptions! You’ll probably still find a few fish for the next couple of weeks, but figure on the pickings being slim. Oh, and if you do go on “opening day” you’re still welcome to practice your catch and release philosophy.

Projected Conditions: I suppose this will be my last Delayed Harvest report for a few months at least, let’s see what the boss can find for me to do in the meantime.

Water Conditions:  Temp: aprox. 61˚           CFS:  110, slighty below normal, but the forecasted rain should bring that level up some.     http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nc/nwis/uv?site_no=03446000

Hatches:  still seeing some yellow sallies, tan caddis, also small green caddis

Fly Suggestions:  below the surface an olive soft hackle, small pink egg pattern, or a Super Duper are a good bet, a bushy attractor, such as a yellow stimulator, or a Tennessee Wulff should draw a strike. General Information: the Madison Co. Delayed Harvest water continues to fish well for me with some of the early stockers coloring up nicely. I’m getting good reports from other Delayed Harvest streams as well, such as the N. Mills, West Fork, and Little River.

Projected Conditions:rain ending the middle of the week with temps. Rising into the mid to upper 80s, it’s sure been a nice spring for fishing the DH waters, a couple of weeks left, get ‘em while you can!

Smallmouth Bass Stream Report

UPDATED EVERY FRIDAY May 18, 2012

WATER CONDITIONS:

The French Broad River is still high with low visibility.  Stackhouse near Marshal, NC was at 6,000+ cfs on Wednesday.  Nolichucky is slightly off color at Erwin.  No report on Pigeon.

Water watch:

FLY SUGGESTIONS:

Crawfish Patterns, Wiggle Minnows, Green and Black Streamers, poppers.

GENERAL INFORMATION:

You can expect to see some “rubber hatches” coming off around Long Shoals down to the River Arts District with the new tubing outfitter grand opening.  The new business is located on HWY 191 where the river is parallel to 191.  All we can do is practice good stream etiquette and hope the tubers will too.

Once the mud clears, fish activity is expected to pick back up as we are still within prime Smallmouth season.  As the water clears, try hitting the banks with poppers.

PROJECTED CONDITIONS:

The French Broad River is on its way to clearing up.  With no significant rain in the forecast, it should be fishable in the next couple days.

Click here for current weather.

GEAR SUGGESTIONS:

Rod: Fast Action comparable to Scott “S” Series rods 8’6”–9’ 6wt.

Leader: 9-12’ 3x-5x Florocarbon.  Option: Blue Sky furled leader.

Vest:  A vest with a work station and plenty of room for big flies.  Fishpond Waterdance or comparable.

CFS:  110 to nearly 300 CFS today http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nc/nwis/uv?site_no=03446000

Fly Suggestions:  below the surface an olive soft hackle, bird’s nest [olive], or small Prince nymphs are a good bet, a bushy attractor, such as a yellow stimulator, or any of the Wulff patterns should draw a strike.

General Information:   Jeff Curtis and I had the opportunity to serve as River Helpers for a group of Casting for Recovery participants this past Sunday and found that the West Fork had been well stocked!  The fish have been spread around nicely by a group of Trout Unlimited volunteers, nicely done guys!

Delayed Harvest water is a hit with kids!

Fly Suggestions:  Little Green Stone, Little Yellow Stone, Clown Shoe Sally, Purple Wooly Bugger, Brown Stone Fly Nymph

General Information:  All Delayed Harvest waters were stocked the previous week.  Recent rain has some DH streams running high and off color.  Larger nymphs and dark colored streamers are good choices.  The fish seem to be a bit more selective, so try the more realistic patterns in your fly box.  A good tactic to use is the Liesenring Lift.  If you are throwing heavier flies, you might want to use a 5wt. rod, doing as little backcasting as possible and throwing a much more open loop.

Projected Conditions:  Looks like the rain is over for a while, with cooler temps. in the forecast for the next several days, so make it a point to get out on the water while we still have DH fish in the streams!

Fly Fishing Report for the Davidson River

Updated Every Wednesday

P42805241 300x224 Davidson River Fishing Report: May 9, 2012

Bad Bad Chunky Brown!

This chunky brown took us on quite a run…

Water Conditions: Normal flows. But want may rise suddenly with afternoon T-storms. Water may be dingy at times.

Hatches: Yellow sallies, midges of various colors, caddis (tan and black), inch worms, occasional bwo

Fly suggestions: Lowe’s midge larva, cream midges, Little lucy, disco midge, micro stone (yellow and black), elk hair caddis, rock worm caddis, midge emergers in gray, black, brown. Inch Worms.  Most any fly from our Davidson River Fly Selection Box would also do…

General Information: Water is around 110 cfs, but may spike with afternoon storms and get dingy. If this happens, add weight and throw something that will get their attention. A San Juan worm is always a good bet. A Streamer will work as well, such as the Slump Buster or Sculpzilla.

Projected Conditions: The river should fish well all week. Just adapt with the conditions; you may be midging in the morning, then need to switch to streamers for the afternoon rain. Don’t be afraid to change flies and adjust your rigs. That is what it takes to catch fish when conditions change suddenly. If it rains, re-rig with something big and dark and add weight.

Smallmouth Bass on Nolichucky River – May 3, 2012

Stream Report:

UPDATED EVERY FRIDAY May 4, 2012

WATER CONDITIONS:

Nolichucky is at a good flow and warming up.

French Broad River is slightly off color but fishable and should be perfect this weekend .  Visibility is approximately 2′.

Pigeon River

FLY SUGGESTIONS:  Crawfish Patterns, Clousers, Poppers, Green and Black Streamers.

GENERAL INFORMATION:  The Nolichucky River offers diverse fishing and some beautiful scenery all within an hour of Asheville.  The gorge section fishes great and is easier to move around on when water level is under 1800 cfs.  Like any gorge, the getting around can be tough on foot but well worth the hike.  This section has class IV rapids with lots of fishy holes, so bring a 9′  5 or 6 wt. rod, heavy flies and respect for the white water.

If you float the river, try the section from the bottom of the gorge at Chestoa down river 4 miles to Erwin, TN.  This section offers great Smallmouth fly fishing opportunities; as well as, the ability to fish for the elusive Musky and the occasional Trout.   If you don’t have access to a vessel, CWO offers guided float trips for Smallmouth Bass and Trout on several rivers.  The Nolichucky is one of those rivers that offers a chance at more than one species of fish.  This is a Smallmouth Bass fishing report, but  nice rainbows can be caught on the Chestoa section.

Smallmouth Bass

PROJECTED CONDITIONS:  Rising temperatures will peak this weekend and then start cooling off.    Fish will more than likely be on the banks in the shade or down deep during the middle of the day.  Morning / evening fishing should be great.

Delayed Harvest Stream Report – April 30, 2012

Fly Fishing Report

Updated Every Monday :  4-30-12

Water Conditions:  Temp: aprox. 55*

CFS: http://www.boatingbeta.com/runs/flows/green

Some areas received quite a lot of rain last week, I had a little over an inch in my gauge in Weaverville, Spring Ck. Was still high and muddy on Sun., Shelton-Laurel higher than normal and a good bit off-color but fishable. I hiked Dupont on Fri. and the Little River did not seem to be higher than normal, guess they didn’t get the heavy rains we did here.

Hatches:  still seeing plenty of black caddis, some sulphers and yellow sallies

Fly Suggestions:  I’m still catching a lot of fish on yellow or pink micro spawn egg patterns, also super dupers in sizes 14 and 16, an olive streamer with rubber legs will get their attention in dingy, fast water.

General Information: DH waters will be restocked next week so get ready for a new crop of trout looking for a “teachable moment”. Remember, if you have a question about a particular DH stream just call either of our CWO shops.

Projected Conditions: Not much chance of rain in the 10 day extended forecast so stream levels are likely to continue to drop for the foreseeable future, highs to be in the low to mid 80s, warm nights, we’ll have to start getting on the streams earlier it seems.

Big Bow on Delayed Harvest

Fly Suggestions:  March Browns, Klinkhammer, Headlight Caddis, Wooly Buggers, Zonkers

General Information:  Delayed Harvest streams are fishing great this week.  Still loads of fish.  With higher water levels, consider using Simms Wading Staff.  Also, don’t forget your split shot.  Fish are looking up and hitting dry flies more and more.  What a great time to get on the water.

Projected Conditions:  Temps will be warming up throughout the week and DH fish are taking naturals.

Delayed Harvest Stream Report – April 20, 2012

Updated Every Monday:  4/16/12

Water Conditions:  Temp 42°  CFS 196 (North Mills) – water levels are high and very fishable  North Mills Stream Flow Link

Delayed Harvest Fishing

Fly Suggestions:  Elk Hair Caddis, March Brown, Caddis Pupae, Egg Patterns, Wooly Buggers

General Information:  Delayed harvest waters are fishing great.  The fish are still taking egg patterns and San Juan Worms, but they are starting to take more and more naturals.  An 8’6” Scott A4 works 4-5wt works great on these streams.  Definitely try a two fly rig – make sure to get those nymphs down on the bottom of the stream.

Projected Conditions:  Water levels should remain on the higher side making streamer fishing productive.  As the temps continue to increase, we will see more and more dry fly action.
