Water Conditions:

South Holston Release Schedule

 Watauga Release Schedule

Hatches:  Mayfly hatches are  becoming more sporadic, especially the Sulphurs. BWO’s will start to play a bigger and bigger role on these rivers. The midge’s are going to be the staple on these waters for the next bit, but with fish starting to get that itch, egg patterns and streamers are not to be ignored either.

Fly Suggestions: I still would not go to either river with out a good selection of Sulphur emerger  patterns and dries. Comparaduns and Cripple’s  are great on top and by hanging a split case underneath you have the whole cain covered. Now is the time to move the BWO’s to the prominent spots in your fly box and to even keep your eye out for a new pattern or two. Comparaduns are always a favorite, but another one the fish seem to enjoy is the Klinkhammer emergers. Loop wing emergers or split cases make great droppers. For the midge hatch some of my favorite nymphs are zebras in both black and red; Rainbow warriors, Black Fly Larva and griffith’s gnats. Sculpin patterns and slump busters can really get some of the bigger fish moving.

General Information: Generation schedules have geared the fly fisherman towards the midge hatch with some running down river to hope to find some fish rising to bugs larger than size 26′s. One thing that can stream line your fishing time is to have multiple rods rigged for different situations. Without having to change rigs more fishing time is allowed and you might also find yourself fishing familiar areas with different techniques. One thing that is very important is to not forget your spare rods as you change locations. It can be a very stressful and even more costly mistake.  If throughout your day of fishing you do run upon some rising fish, try to focus on one or two. Look for great drifts with longer leaders. Approaching fish from up river, allowing flies to be seen before leaders and fly line can greatly improve your odds.

Projected Conditions: Expect generous generation over the next few days with  forecast for rain fading away look for generation schedules to be relaxed. As the weather continues to cool expect to see fish grouping up a bit more than usual and look for the browns colors to really start to shine!!

Finding fish in high dirty water!

Water Conditions:

South Holston Release Schedule

Watauga Release Schedule

Hatches: Sulphurs on the Holston and Sulphurs and Caddis on the Watauga. Midges will be moving most of the day but, like the mayfly and caddis, the fish will have a harder time seeing them on the surface because of the higher flows/generation schedule and the water being off colored.

Double Bunny

Fly Suggestions: With TVA releasing more water on both rivers than we are used to seeing as of late, visibility on these rivers will be at a minimum. So matching the hatch might be tougher to do. Fish more attractor patterns i.e. egg patterns, Girdle Bugs, Princes, San Juan’s, and Copper John’s. Larger black Stones are another great bet because of the silhouette the give in dirty water. Typically if I am trying to match the hatch I will fish a size or two larger flies just to help with visibility. Streamers are a GREAT choice of approaches to the higher flows that we will see over the next stretch. Some of my favorites are Double Bunny’s, Articulated Leeches, Sculp-Zilla, Slump Busters, and Belly Dancer’s. Team one of these up with a Rio Freshwater Sink VersileaderAdd some 2x tippet and bang those banks with those baitfish imitations.

General Information: Although conditions are not going to be ideal for dry fly

Floating on Big water

fishing, if floating one of the tailwaters I would definitely have a dry dropper rod rigged up, but most of my attention would go into chucking and ducking streamers, or finding seams and slow drifting heavy nymphs. A rod that can handle all of these situations is the faster action Scott S4.It cand deliver accurate casts even with those heavy nymphs and streamers, and then turn around and protect the tippet when the dry fly opportunity arises. Some of the key areas to target are the banks, tail outs of pools, all logjams, eddies, behind rocks, and also look for dirt lines. Obvious clear dirty lines offer fish a lot of feeding opportunities.

Projected Conditions: With fewer heavy rains in the forecast, TVA will likely let up on their generation schedules which will allow for more wading access. When the clarity picks up, no matter the flow, the fish will start keying in on the adult bugs and not the ones that are right in their faces.

With the lack of flow we will see the strands of  DIDYMO have been flushed out. As generations decrease expect the bugs and fish to move back to normal feeding situations.

Fly Fishing Report

Updated Every Monday :  4-30-12

Water Conditions:  Temp: aprox. 55*

CFS: http://www.boatingbeta.com/runs/flows/green

Some areas received quite a lot of rain last week, I had a little over an inch in my gauge in Weaverville, Spring Ck. Was still high and muddy on Sun., Shelton-Laurel higher than normal and a good bit off-color but fishable. I hiked Dupont on Fri. and the Little River did not seem to be higher than normal, guess they didn’t get the heavy rains we did here.

Hatches:  still seeing plenty of black caddis, some sulphers and yellow sallies

Fly Suggestions:  I’m still catching a lot of fish on yellow or pink micro spawn egg patterns, also super dupers in sizes 14 and 16, an olive streamer with rubber legs will get their attention in dingy, fast water.

General Information: DH waters will be restocked next week so get ready for a new crop of trout looking for a “teachable moment”. Remember, if you have a question about a particular DH stream just call either of our CWO shops.

Projected Conditions: Not much chance of rain in the 10 day extended forecast so stream levels are likely to continue to drop for the foreseeable future, highs to be in the low to mid 80s, warm nights, we’ll have to start getting on the streams earlier it seems.

Delayed Harvest Fishing

Fly Suggestions:  Elk Hair Caddis, March Brown, Caddis Pupae, Egg Patterns, Wooly Buggers

General Information:  Delayed harvest waters are fishing great.  The fish are still taking egg patterns and San Juan Worms, but they are starting to take more and more naturals.  An 8’6” Scott A4 works 4-5wt works great on these streams.  Definitely try a two fly rig – make sure to get those nymphs down on the bottom of the stream.

Projected Conditions:  Water levels should remain on the higher side making streamer fishing productive.  As the temps continue to increase, we will see more and more dry fly action.
