Water Conditions:  South Holston Release Schedule

Watauga Release Schedule

Hatches: Look for some Sulphurs but be expecting BWO’s on both rivers. The Watauga will still have some caddis moving around and the larva are always there.

Fly Suggestions: I would make sure to have some BWO CDC Comparaduns and even some sulphurs also. Headlight caddis in Green and Brown will bring fish to the surface on the Watauga. Bubble butt caddis in tan and dynamite caddis work great as droppers or on a tandem nymph rig. Split cases are always a great bet on both of these rivers as droppers or trailing an attractor pattern. When fishing these rivers don’t forget the midge box as these cooler temperatures approach. Zebra’s, Copper Blondies, and Black Fly Larva are good bets if the situation arises.

Great way to figure out Access to the rivers!

General Information: Look for fish to be moving into their spawning lies. Watch where you wade and stay off the pea size gravel in order to insure next years batch of WILD fish! Flows have been generous as of late but there is still great wade fishing to be had and even better float fishing. Fish are all colored up (even more than usual) and are looking to put on calories before their focus changes to reproducing. When rising fish are around fish specifically to the more active fish. If a big fish is spotted work the fish with a down river drift. Although they will eat of the surface they are much more likely to feed subsurface, so don’t forget your dropper. Allow slow drifts and change flies after 5 great drifts. Keeping a good amount of gear organized can be a feat in itself much less fooling a large suspecting brown. The Fishpond Wasatch Tech Pack allows you to organize your equipment and gives you enough space for everything and the kitchen sink!

Projected Conditions: Cooler weather is on the way so look fro some of that nastiness that screams Blue Wing Olives. Flows are looking to stay heavy so earlier wading is your best option with float trips giving anglers a chance to see a bunch of water in a limited amount of time. For more experienced angler, floating during this time allows you to throw some serious meat to some high flow adjusted browns.

Water Conditions:  South Holston Release Schedule

                                         Watauga Release Schedule

Hatches: Midges and Blue Wings are the bugs to be looking for with the Sulphurs starting to wain in numbers.

Fly Suggestions: BWO patterns especially the CDC Comparaduns and Klink Emergers. Midge Clusters and Zebra midges. Copper Blonde’s in 20′s and also have plenty of Split Case Emergers. Higher water has been the order lately so heavy stones on the watauga and eggs and Scuds on both. For the experienced angler streamers can produce some extremely large fish looking to add some calories before the spawn

General Information: Now is a great time to be floating the Tennessee Tailwaters. Large fish are making themselves more available than they are most of the year and with more consistent flows this is your best option of getting in a full day on these rivers. The spawn is just around the corner and soon certain areas of the South Holston will be closed to all fishing and a lot of the larger fish will be focused on that as opposed to feeding. Streamers will be you best weapon in your search for a trophy trout. With Temperatures cooling the BWO’s are really starting to make their presence know to the anglers while the fish have been in tune for a while.

Projected Conditions: Conditions will remain similar over the next week. Book a float trip to see these spectacular rivers and get your chance at a trophy fish!

This Smallmouth was caught on the Fly on a recent scouting trip.   The bite turned on around 10am with most fish taken on the surface.  Casting top water flies 60-80 feet under overhanging trees, followed by an explosion that sounds like a bomb going off and a toilet flushing all at the same time, will do a few things to a person.  One, it will make your wrist hurt, two it will make you giggle like a little kid.  You will make sounds you didn’t know you could make, yell louder than all the banjos playing in WNC, and cancel all obligations for the following week.  To get in on the fun… Let the professional fly fishing guides from Curtis Wright Outfitters take you there!

With the below average, cooler temperatures we are having, the Smallmouth are looking up and top water action is amazing right now.  Poppers and other buggy top water flies have been producing good numbers and bigger fish in the 3-6lb. range.   Fishing has been most productive on overcast days with scattered thunderstorms and slightly off color water.   On clear days, fish are spooking quicker, forcing longer casts and stealth tactics.

 NEW REGULATIONS:

In case you are not aware, new NC regulations are in effect for Smallmouth Bass.

SIZE LIMIT: 14-inch minimum, except 2 may be less than 14 inches.

DAILY CREEL LIMIT: 5 in combination, including only 2 less than 14 inches.

This may not be good for long term fish populations.   What this inevitably could mean is that there will be less fish in the river and smaller fish all around.  Smallmouth in the 14″-20″ range are responsible for most reproduction.   Take those away, and you end up with a larger population of small fish that are eating all the food and not reproducing.  This could be bad news for those of us that support catch and release conservation practices.

To voice your opinion and concerns, contact the commissioners office at 919-707-0010.  Or email the chairman at dwhj@bellsouth.net

PROJECTED CONDITIONS:

Temperatures are expected to be in the upper 70′s with scattered thunderstorms, lows in the mid 50′s.  It’s going to be a great week for fishing!

Smallmouth Bass Stream Report

WATER CONDITIONS:

Clear water, 2′-3′ visibility.  Normal water level, but falling.  Water temperature varying in the upper 60′s and lower 70′s.

FLY SUGGESTIONS:

Rust colored Crawfish Patterns, Wiggle Minnows, White and Black Streamers, poppers.

Our newest bass fly, ” Puckerlip” has a soft foam head and is a great top water fly.

GENERAL INFORMATION:

As the temperatures rise, try fishing sections of water just down river of where a cold water stream enters the river.  In addition, as the sun progresses throughout the day, fish the shady banks.  For instance, in the morning the shady side will be river right and in the afternoon the shady side will be river left.  On a recent Smallmouth trip with Richard Witt, most of the

fish were sitting in medium speed water in an average of 3′ depth.  However, the fly being used didn’t have a lot of weight to it, so that would explain why this depth produced more fish.  There again, if you are not catching fish, you more than likely are not getting your flies deep enough.   Richard was using a Scott 9′ – 8WT rod with a very nice Galvin reel.

Fish were also found in their typical holding spots.  Typically fish like three things… food, rest and oxygen.  For instance, a big boulder or rock ledge is an ideal home for a Smallmouth bass.  There, a fish can

rest in the slow water behind, or in front of the rock, or below the ledge.  There it can quickly move a few feet into a bubble line or current where food is channeled and then immediately move back to its resting place.  And the water tumbling over the rock provides the oxygen they need.

PROJECTED CONDITIONS:

Temperatures are expected to reach the 90′s this week with scattered thunderstorms.

Keep an eye and an ear out for Cicadas this summer.  If they are present, you can be sure fish will be feeding on them.  Cicadas have been present in Tennessee already but none have been spotted on French Broad River yet.

Smallmouth Bass on Nolichucky River – May 3, 2012

Stream Report:

UPDATED EVERY FRIDAY May 4, 2012

WATER CONDITIONS:

Nolichucky is at a good flow and warming up.

French Broad River is slightly off color but fishable and should be perfect this weekend .  Visibility is approximately 2′.

Pigeon River

FLY SUGGESTIONS:  Crawfish Patterns, Clousers, Poppers, Green and Black Streamers.

GENERAL INFORMATION:  The Nolichucky River offers diverse fishing and some beautiful scenery all within an hour of Asheville.  The gorge section fishes great and is easier to move around on when water level is under 1800 cfs.  Like any gorge, the getting around can be tough on foot but well worth the hike.  This section has class IV rapids with lots of fishy holes, so bring a 9′  5 or 6 wt. rod, heavy flies and respect for the white water.

If you float the river, try the section from the bottom of the gorge at Chestoa down river 4 miles to Erwin, TN.  This section offers great Smallmouth fly fishing opportunities; as well as, the ability to fish for the elusive Musky and the occasional Trout.   If you don’t have access to a vessel, CWO offers guided float trips for Smallmouth Bass and Trout on several rivers.  The Nolichucky is one of those rivers that offers a chance at more than one species of fish.  This is a Smallmouth Bass fishing report, but  nice rainbows can be caught on the Chestoa section.

Rod: Fast Action comparable to Scott “S” Series rods 8’6”–9’ 6wt.

Leader: 9-12’ 3x-5x Florocarbon.  Option: Blue Sky furled leader.
