River Maps 300x225 Tennessee Tailwaters 8/7/12

Stop by, or call, one of our shops to find out about our full selection of Fishwater Maps!

General Information: With the most day generations on the Holston, midges are of major importance for those only looking to get their fishing in before the generation. For those looking to make a full day of it, get ready to do some jumping around. The Fishwater maps can help out with that tremendously. The hatches will be heavier in certain locations so keep your eyes open for feeding fish. The Watauga has been fishing great on our recent float trips and there is plenty of water and it is nice and COLD! Let us show you around! This is a great way to see a lot of water and to have a chance at some trophy fish without all the walking. Terrestrials have been working extremely well with some large fish waiting under trees and off of grassy fields.

Projected Conditions: Look for the conditions to stay similar over the next week hatch wise, and if the rain avoids us possible even some relaxed flows. With the Temps being like they have it can really take a toll on you and your skin being out in the wide open. Make sure to prepare for it with your Buff’s and Suntan Lotion. Stop by one of our Shop’s, we have something for everyone!

Smallmouth Bass Stream Report – May 11, 2012

UPDATED EVERY FRIDAY May 11, 2012

WATER CONDITIONS:

With the recent rain, waters are above normal and cloudy.  It is amazing how quickly the French Broad River turns to chocolate milk after a rain. In less than 12 hours the FB went from excellent conditions to muddy and three feet up from the day before.  And that is the current condition of the French Broad River, mud and more mud.

Wiggle Minnow

Crawfish Patterns, Wiggle Minnows, Green and Black Streamers.

GENERAL INFORMATION:

Before the rain came, fish were very active with lots of numbers in the 1.5 lb range and the occasional 3-5 lb.  Several sections were fishing well near Asheville.  Float trips are the best way to cover a lot of water.  Once the fish catch on, its time to pull up the anchor and hit the next spot.

Smallies LOVE Crawfish!

I wouldn’t recommend eating fish out of the FB with the high mercury levels and other pollution, but if you do… Regulations allow 5 in combination, including only 2 less than 12 inches, 12-inch minimum, except that, 2 may be less than 12 inches.

 PROJECTED CONDITIONS:

Temperatures are cooler this week with more rain moving in on Monday.  The FB might be clear enough to fish by Mother’s day, if your lucky enough to have a mother that likes to fish!

GEAR SUGGESTIONS:

Rod: Fast Action comparable to Scott “S” Series rods 8’6”–9’ 6wt.

Leader: 9-12’ 3x-5x Florocarbon.  Option: Blue Sky furled leader.

Vest:  A vest with a work station and plenty of room for big flies.  Fishpond Waterdance or comparable.

Smallmouth Bass on Nolichucky River – May 3, 2012

Stream Report:

UPDATED EVERY FRIDAY May 4, 2012

WATER CONDITIONS:

Nolichucky is at a good flow and warming up.

French Broad River is slightly off color but fishable and should be perfect this weekend .  Visibility is approximately 2′.

Pigeon River

FLY SUGGESTIONS:  Crawfish Patterns, Clousers, Poppers, Green and Black Streamers.

GENERAL INFORMATION:  The Nolichucky River offers diverse fishing and some beautiful scenery all within an hour of Asheville.  The gorge section fishes great and is easier to move around on when water level is under 1800 cfs.  Like any gorge, the getting around can be tough on foot but well worth the hike.  This section has class IV rapids with lots of fishy holes, so bring a 9′  5 or 6 wt. rod, heavy flies and respect for the white water.

If you float the river, try the section from the bottom of the gorge at Chestoa down river 4 miles to Erwin, TN.  This section offers great Smallmouth fly fishing opportunities; as well as, the ability to fish for the elusive Musky and the occasional Trout.   If you don’t have access to a vessel, CWO offers guided float trips for Smallmouth Bass and Trout on several rivers.  The Nolichucky is one of those rivers that offers a chance at more than one species of fish.  This is a Smallmouth Bass fishing report, but  nice rainbows can be caught on the Chestoa section.
