General Information: Another new batch of fish in the DH streams, they’ll be easy pickin’s for a while so get out there and get an ego boost! Something bright, flashy, a white Wooly Bugger fished downstream will work well. We’ve had a couple of drizzly days but no measurable precipitation, stream levels are still somewhat below normal and very clear, this may require a bit more stealth when approaching the water to avoid spooking the fish. A good pair of polarized glasses will help to spot your quarry before they see you, Costas and Guidelines are available at both CWO stores.

Projected Conditions: Temps. Will be warming back into the low to mid 60s, but no rain in sight for at least the rest of the week.

Delayed Harvest Stream Report 10-22-12

Updated Every Monday:  10-22-12

Water Conditions:  Temp 58⁰   84cfs  http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nwis/uv?03446000

Hatches: tiny BWOs, creme midges, October Caddis

Fly Suggestions:  October Caddis pupae size 8, Orange Palmer, Orange Stimulator, Boss Hogs size 12 and 16, Purple Prince nymphs size 14, Red Rubber legged Copper Johns size 14 and 16

General Information: Well it appears that the days of standing in one spot and catching 15 or 20 fish are behind us, at least for another week or so when the second stocking occurs. The first batch of fish has wised up a bit and require a smaller, somewhat more realistic fly to produce results. The lower water conditions don’t help either, so you also may have to be a bit stealthier on approach to the water.

Projected Conditions: The 10 day forecast promises continued cool temperatures, with little chance of rain. [it is that time of year after all]

Delayed Harvest Stream Report 10-8-12

Updated Every Monday:  10-8-12

Water Conditions:  Temp 64⁰   114cfs  http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nwis/uv?03446000

Hatches: a few October Caddis have been spotted!

Fly Suggestions:  October Caddis pupae size 8, Micro Spawn egg in Pink or Oregon Cheese colors, Boss Hogs size 12 and 16, Purple Prince nymphs size 14, Red Rubber legged Copper Johns size 14 and 16

General Information: All DH streams have been stocked by now, with the exception of the North Toe in Spruce Pine which will be stocked on 10-12 to coincide with a study the Fish and Wildlife folks are conducting. Water levels are great, slightly above normal for this time of year, the cool overnight temps. are making for some happy, active fish. These fresh stockers are still trying to get the hang of eating real bugs, so for the time being something a little large and flashy is still the ticket to a productive day on the water.

Projected Conditions: The 10 day forecast promises continued cool temperatures, with little chance of rain. [it is that time of year after all]

Updated Every Monday:   5-21-12

Water Conditions:  Temp: aprox. 61˚           CFS:  110, slighty below normal, but the forecasted rain should bring that level up some.     http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nc/nwis/uv?site_no=03446000

Hatches:  still seeing some yellow sallies, tan caddis, also small green caddis

Fly Suggestions:  below the surface an olive soft hackle, small pink egg pattern, or a Super Duper are a good bet, a bushy attractor, such as a yellow stimulator, or a Tennessee Wulff should draw a strike. General Information: the Madison Co. Delayed Harvest water continues to fish well for me with some of the early stockers coloring up nicely. I’m getting good reports from other Delayed Harvest streams as well, such as the N. Mills, West Fork, and Little River.

Projected Conditions:rain ending the middle of the week with temps. Rising into the mid to upper 80s, it’s sure been a nice spring for fishing the DH waters, a couple of weeks left, get ‘em while you can!

Delayed Harvest Fishing

Fly Suggestions:  Elk Hair Caddis, March Brown, Caddis Pupae, Egg Patterns, Wooly Buggers

General Information:  Delayed harvest waters are fishing great.  The fish are still taking egg patterns and San Juan Worms, but they are starting to take more and more naturals.  An 8’6” Scott A4 works 4-5wt works great on these streams.  Definitely try a two fly rig – make sure to get those nymphs down on the bottom of the stream.

Projected Conditions:  Water levels should remain on the higher side making streamer fishing productive.  As the temps continue to increase, we will see more and more dry fly action.
