Midges working in the first sun of the day

General Information: The South Holston will be sluicing for almost the next month and this can bring some spectacular fishing both from a boat and wading. The hatches have been great as of late but you have to be prepared for either Sulphurs or BWOs. The BWO’s are the more consistent bet but there have been good reports of Sulphur showings. The midge fishing has been consistent and will be the go to in down times of fish activity. Scuds and Sowbugs should be present in your box as well especially if you are fishing around grass beds. The Watuga has been fishing really well and some BIG fish are moving. The consistent bet when floating this river is a fairly deep nymph rig with an attractor as the lead fly. When surface activity occurs the fish will tend to be focusing on BWO’s and especially midges in the am when the sun first hits the water. Spawning is occurring on both of these rivers so when wading, be careful were your walking, so not to disturb spawning fish.

Every fish fights hard!

Projected Conditions : Conditions will remain similar over the next week but expect to see a few less boats and people on the river as the temperatures cool and the holidays move in. Always be prepared for the worst situations, so that way when nature throw you a curve you will be one step ahead. Simms head and hand gear can make any fishing experience more enjoyable!

Fly suggestions: Terrestrials. Midge emergers in gray, cream, brown. Sulphur comparaduns, light cahills,  Lowe’s midge larva, Little lucy, red disco midge, elk hair caddis, rock worm caddis, . Inch Worm, ants, beadles.  Most any flyfrom our Davidson River Fly Selection Box would also do…

P61407061 300x224 Davidson River Fishing Report – Week of June 27, 2012

General Information: 55 cfs is a LOW water level for the Davidson and the fish will be extra wary of poor casting and short leaders. I’ve ditched my waders for the summer and am using my Simms wading socks. Another good option is the Simms Wading Sandal. Make sure you make every cast count and sneak up to the big fish. 6x flourocarbon is a must, 7x may even be called for with dry fly fishing. We’re also getting into terrestrial season, so consider using an ant or even something bigger, with a dropper underneath. We have a great selection of terrestrial patterns, such as the flyin’ beetle , at both shops!

Projected Conditions:The river should fish well all week! With the humid weather, look for some afternoon and evening hatches to come off. If it rains heavy, re-rig with something big and dark and add weight.

Watuaga River Rainbow 300x225 Tennessee Tailwaters Stream Report May 1, 2012

Watauga River Rainbow taken on a Sparkle Braid Pupae

Water Conditions:

Hatches: Still seeing good numbers of Black and Tan Caddis on the Watauga with fish focusing more on the pupae as opposed to the adults. Sulphurs and Craneflies are also starting to make their appearances. The South Holston is still a Sulphur factory pumping them out although it has been for shorter spans and much more sporadic here as of late.

Fly Suggestions: For the Watauga; Headlight Caddis (12-18), Peacock Caddis (14-18), Grizzly Wulff’s (14-18), Olive Girdle Bugs, Black/Tan Braid Caddis Pupae (14-16), Green Dynamite Pupae (14-16) For The South Holston; PMD Silhouette Dun (14-18), Various Soft Hackles (14-18), CDC Comparadun Sulphur/BWO (16-20), Orange/Gray/Olive Scuds (14-18), Black Fly Larva (20-22), Red/Black Zebra Midges (18-26)

Bright Sun Shiny Day1 225x300 Tennessee Tailwaters Stream Report May 1, 2012

Sunny Day on the South Holston

General Information: Full flows on the Watauga have been happening more often than of late and with dirty feeder streams pumping in silt, nymphing has been the bread and butter. With adult Caddis skittering around it’s easy to daydream about casting dries, but instead focus on getting your drifts down and slow and you will be rewarded. A good weapon to have in those heavy generation or high water days is the St Croix Bank Robber. When slinging heavy streamers or larger nymph rigs, this rod can make your day a LOT easier.  The Holston has been a bit more like usually with great flows for the wade fisherman. Very nice fish have been coming to those who have the patience to stalk wary fish and to make their cast count. In the Sulphur and midge down time, throw scuds. Especially when fishing in the grass, you might be surprised what pulls back.

Projected Conditions: Conditions for the up-coming week are very summer like. With temperatures on the warmer side which means spookier fish so approach all situations with delicacy.

Big Bow on Delayed Harvest

Fly Suggestions:  March Browns, Klinkhammer, Headlight Caddis, Wooly Buggers, Zonkers

General Information:  Delayed Harvest streams are fishing great this week.  Still loads of fish.  With higher water levels, consider using Simms Wading Staff.  Also, don’t forget your split shot.  Fish are looking up and hitting dry flies more and more.  What a great time to get on the water.

Projected Conditions:  Temps will be warming up throughout the week and DH fish are taking naturals.

Delayed Harvest Stream Report – April 20, 2012

Updated Every Monday:  4/16/12

Delayed Harvest Fishing

Fly Suggestions:  Elk Hair Caddis, March Brown, Caddis Pupae, Egg Patterns, Wooly Buggers

General Information:  Delayed harvest waters are fishing great.  The fish are still taking egg patterns and San Juan Worms, but they are starting to take more and more naturals.  An 8’6” Scott A4 works 4-5wt works great on these streams.  Definitely try a two fly rig – make sure to get those nymphs down on the bottom of the stream.

Projected Conditions:  Water levels should remain on the higher side making streamer fishing productive.  As the temps continue to increase, we will see more and more dry fly action.
