Smallmouth Bass Stream Report

UPDATED EVERY FRIDAY June 1, 2012

WATER CONDITIONS:

Clear water, good visibility.  Higher than normal water level.  Water temperature varying in the 60′s.

Water watch:

FLY SUGGESTIONS:

Crawfish Patterns, Wiggle Minnows, Green and Black Streamers, poppers.

GENERAL INFORMATION:

sm 300x225 Smallmouth Bass Stream ReportSmallmouth bass will typically stay near their spawning grounds after the spawn. That is if there is plenty of food and the conditions are still good in that location.

Being able to see the fish or underwater structure will help you catch more fish.  Invest in a pair of good polarized sunglasses comparable to Smith or Costa.  The more expensive, quality glasses are just as easy to lose as cheaper versions, so try using the floating sun-glass savers.

If you are fishing with a buddy, try fishing different rigs to start out.  This will help you figure out what the fish are looking for faster.  If you are by yourself and can carry more than one rod, then pre-rig multiple rods so you spend less time tying and more time fishing. The more your rig is in the water, the more chances you have of hooking up.  It’s a simple concept, but an effective one.  If you know you smallmouth1 225x300 Smallmouth Bass Stream Reporthave fish in front of you but can’t get them to eat, don’t give up and move to another hole yet.  Try changing your presentation first.  That could mean changing the depth of your rig, the color of your fly or lure, the direction from which you fish the hole and the speed at which you fish.  Fishing “slow”  translates to working a crawfish on the bottom.  Fishing “fast” translates fishing top water, stripping a popper etc. quickly across the surface.  Have confidence in your fly or lure selection.   As conditions change, so does presentation.

PROJECTED CONDITIONS:

Temperatures are expected to reach the high 80′s this week with scattered thunderstorms.

Keep an eye and an ear out for Cicadas this summer.  If they are present, you can be sure fish will be feeding on them.  Cicadas have been present in Tennessee already but none have been spotted on French Broad River yet.

Smallmouth Bass on Nolichucky River – May 3, 2012

Stream Report:

UPDATED EVERY FRIDAY May 4, 2012

WATER CONDITIONS:

Nolichucky is at a good flow and warming up.

French Broad River is slightly off color but fishable and should be perfect this weekend .  Visibility is approximately 2′.

Pigeon River

FLY SUGGESTIONS:  Crawfish Patterns, Clousers, Poppers, Green and Black Streamers.

GENERAL INFORMATION:  The Nolichucky River offers diverse fishing and some beautiful scenery all within an hour of Asheville.  The gorge section fishes great and is easier to move around on when water level is under 1800 cfs.  Like any gorge, the getting around can be tough on foot but well worth the hike.  This section has class IV rapids with lots of fishy holes, so bring a 9′  5 or 6 wt. rod, heavy flies and respect for the white water.

If you float the river, try the section from the bottom of the gorge at Chestoa down river 4 miles to Erwin, TN.  This section offers great Smallmouth fly fishing opportunities; as well as, the ability to fish for the elusive Musky and the occasional Trout.   If you don’t have access to a vessel, CWO offers guided float trips for Smallmouth Bass and Trout on several rivers.  The Nolichucky is one of those rivers that offers a chance at more than one species of fish.  This is a Smallmouth Bass fishing report, but  nice rainbows can be caught on the Chestoa section.

FLY SUGGESTIONS:  Crawfish Patterns, Clousers, Poppers, Green and Black Streamers.

GENERAL INFORMATION: Smallmouth Bass can often be found in sections of river where plenty of underwater structure is present.   Rocks, trees, bridge pilings etc.  are fishy locations to focus on.  Depending on temperatures, fish will fluctuate between deep pools and shallow water.  Work the seams and deep pools with plenty of weight to get your flies down.  The faster the current, the more weight you’ll need to get your rig down fast.  In the warmer temperatures, try throwing poppers to the banks and under over-hanging tree branches.
