General Information:

Some roads in the Pisgah National Forest and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park remain closed awaiting repairs from the storms in January. Make sure to check before you go. Cataloochee is now open from the south but hwy 441 is still closed north of Cherokee for road repairs.

Projected Conditions:

Water levels are still above average for this time of year. We are getting rain weekly which keeps the water table full for the foreseeable future. Water temps are fluctuating due to Warm/Cold weather patterns. Last weekend highs in the 70′s and low’s in the 40′s brought the water temps up to almost 50 degrees. The cold spell this week has dropped the water temps back down in the low 40′s range. Hatches are progressing nicely and just a bit behind schedule. Almost time for the March Browns to come out in numbers – a sure sign that spring has arrived.

Water Conditions:  South Holston Release Schedule

                                         Watauga Release Schedule

Hatches: Blue Wing Olives and midges will be the hatches to watch for over the next couple of months with some black caddis, and winter stones thrown in.

Fly Suggestions: To match the hatches a good bet is the BWO CDC Comparadun. Quill Body Parachutes are also a good bet. For emergers and nymphs try a Klinkhammer emerger in BWO or a Loop Wing Emerger. Down deeper try a split case BWO or Mighty May BWO. Peacock Caddis and black Elk Hair Caddis will do well to imitate the winter stones and caddis. For the midges, Midge Clusters fish well with a zebra or black fly larva hanging underneath. The large Copper Blondie is another dropper that is a must. Griffith’s Gnat or Brook’s Sprout midges will do well also as adult midge imitations. With Higher flow rates due to rain/snow streamers and heavy nymphs will get most of the play over the next bit thought. Sculpzilla’s and Articulated Leeches fished on a Rio Sink Tip Leader.  Can help you get down to were the big ones are lurking. Don’t forget your box of junk flies and you are all set!

Blue Winged Olive from the Watauga River

General Information: All Water on the South Holston is Now Open! Regular fishing regulations have gone back into effect on the South Holston and bug activity has been very good on both of the Tennessee Tailwater but………………they have been generating 24 hrs for a while now. Throwing big heavy streamers on sink tip lines will get down into the strike range and look for the dead water opportunities and slow drift larger attractors through. These types of water will also give you some of the best chances at dry fly fishing.

Projected Conditions: With the lakes levels being high still look for the TVA to continue with the flow schedules on these tailwaters. Keep an eye for when they drop the flow and call in sick and head to the river because the fish will be able to see the emerging insects much easier and the dry fly fishing should shortly follow!

Midges working in the first sun of the day

General Information: The South Holston will be sluicing for almost the next month and this can bring some spectacular fishing both from a boat and wading. The hatches have been great as of late but you have to be prepared for either Sulphurs or BWOs. The BWO’s are the more consistent bet but there have been good reports of Sulphur showings. The midge fishing has been consistent and will be the go to in down times of fish activity. Scuds and Sowbugs should be present in your box as well especially if you are fishing around grass beds. The Watuga has been fishing really well and some BIG fish are moving. The consistent bet when floating this river is a fairly deep nymph rig with an attractor as the lead fly. When surface activity occurs the fish will tend to be focusing on BWO’s and especially midges in the am when the sun first hits the water. Spawning is occurring on both of these rivers so when wading, be careful were your walking, so not to disturb spawning fish.

Every fish fights hard!

Projected Conditions : Conditions will remain similar over the next week but expect to see a few less boats and people on the river as the temperatures cool and the holidays move in. Always be prepared for the worst situations, so that way when nature throw you a curve you will be one step ahead. Simms head and hand gear can make any fishing experience more enjoyable!

Smallmouth Bass Stream Report for November 9, 2012

UPDATED EVERY FRIDAY

WATER CONDITIONS:

Water level is below normal.  Water clarity is currently clear with 4′-6′ visibility.

WATER WATCH:

FLY SUGGESTIONS:

Crawfish, Poppers, Black and White Streamers.

GENERAL INFORMATION:

9 224x300 Smallmouth Bass Stream Report for November 9, 2012
The Smallmouth bass are finicky right now as a result of the below average temperatures WNC has been seeing.  Never the less, on the days where temperatures have reached the mid 60′ to 70′s, the bite has been on.  One a recent trip last week, this 2lb. Smallmouth was taken on a white and black popper close to the bank, in deep water.   Several other fish in the 1.5-3lb. range were taken on black crayfish patterns and white streamers such as the Bellydancer, which we carry in the shop.  We have  a nice assortment of bass flies and lures in the shop or you can check out the online store.

When fishing topwater, you’ll need that extra “Ummph” to get those big poppers through the air.  A 9′ 8wt. rod (comparable to Scott “S” Series rods ),with floating line and a 10-14′, 6-14 lb. test leader is the ideal setup for casting your fly 70′ with accuracy.  Popper sizes have been ranging between 1/0-4 in various colors.

51 224x300 Smallmouth Bass Stream Report for November 9, 2012

The fall is a beautiful time of the year to spend a couple days on the water catching trout or smallmouth bass.  CWO offers several packages that include lodging and a guided fishing trip.  Whether you are interested in a float trip or wade trip for Trout or Smallmouth Bass, let the professional fly fishing guides from Curtis Wright Outfitters take you there!

The picture to the right was taken on the French Broad River last week at a favorite lunch spot.

PROJECTED CONDITIONS:

11 300x224 Smallmouth Bass Stream Report for November 9, 2012

Temperatures are expected to range from 33 to 67 degrees this week.  The Smallmouth bite may turn on this week with the warmer temperatures.  We have been seeing some cold mornings like this one here (pictured).  Once the temperatures start getting into the 30′s for the season, the fish start acting lethargic and are often sitting down deep.  That doesn’t mean topwater should be ruled out.  Try taking several rods rigged differently.  This will help speed the process of elimination up if it isn’t obvious where the fish are feeding.  Click here for current weather.

GEAR RECOMMENDATIONS:

Rod: Fast Action comparable to Scott “S” Series rods 9’ 6-8wt.

Leader: 9-12’ 2x-4x Florocarbon.

Vest:  A vest with a work station and plenty of room for big flies.  Fishpond Waterdance or comparable.

Something bright, flashy, a white Wooly Bugger fished downstream will work well. We’ve had a couple of drizzly days but no measurable precipitation, stream levels are still somewhat below normal and very clear, this may require a bit more stealth when approaching the water to avoid spooking the fish. A good pair of polarized glasses will help to spot your quarry before they see you, Costas and Guidelines are available at both CWO stores.

General Information: TVA has been giving a bit more respite on the flows as of late including some very LOW flows. Be aware of the CLOSED fishing areas on the South Holston due to fish spawning grounds, but there is still a TON of water available to fish. BWO’s have been the key as of late and we don’t expect that to change in the near future. They love the nasty days, so they will keep us coming out in the nastiest of weather. Two tools that can make your fishing a little easier this time of year and also help ensure that the trophy fish you are dancing with does not get away. The Scott S4 is a faster action rod that can really help to turn over larger, heavier flies even into a stiff head wind. It is also great at throwing streamers all day. Another great piece to add to that weapon would be the Lamson Guru 2 . With a super smooth drag system you can focus on where that fish is headed next and with the waterproof housing you don’t have to care.

Guru Reels 300x225 Tennessee Tailwater Fishing Report November 6th, 2012

Lamson Guru 2

Projected Conditions:  Look for mother nature to  keeping showing herself with some weekend reminders of fall. Longer leaders and smaller flies will be more and more in the daily discussions of the folks who are spending a bunch of their time on these rivers. Certain fish are in the spawning mode so do be careful where you are stepping because not all the fish can read the signs where the spawning grounds are are we don’t want to hinder the future of our fishery. Stay Warm out there!!

Fly Suggestions: CDC Comaparaduns for both Sulphurs and BWO’s. Go on the smaller size (22) on the BWO’s. Split cases are always a good bet and I would also have some junk flies ready to dredge. Midge clusters, zebra midges, Black fly larva, and Rainbow Warriors are also great to have in the box. Don’t forget your girdle bugs as well.

General Information: Flows have been staying consistently full and the BWO’s are really starting to make their presence known. Fish are feeding voraciously on them but the size of your fly has to be just right. Make sure to carry a variety of BWO’s in sizes 16-24. A few sulphurs are still showing up and when they do boy do they stand out to the fish. Look for Big fish to be on their spawning areas already and getting ready to do their thing. Watch where you wade, and remember, certain areas of the South Holston are closed until the first of February starting November 1st (Thursday)!

Projected Conditions: With cooler temps setting in look for fish to be feeding more below the surface on nymphs and emerging insects but be ready for when the hatch pops off. Don’t forget your Seagar Florocarbon Tippet

Fly Suggestions:  October Caddis pupae size 8, Orange Palmer, Orange Stimulator, Boss Hogs size 12 and 16, Purple Prince nymphs size 14, Red Rubber legged Copper Johns size 14 and 16

General Information: Well it appears that the days of standing in one spot and catching 15 or 20 fish are behind us, at least for another week or so when the second stocking occurs. The first batch of fish has wised up a bit and require a smaller, somewhat more realistic fly to produce results. The lower water conditions don’t help either, so you also may have to be a bit stealthier on approach to the water.

Projected Conditions: The 10 day forecast promises continued cool temperatures, with little chance of rain. [it is that time of year after all]
