You know how we all make our New Year’s resolutions?  Most of which involve getting more fit, losing weight, etc. (at least mine do – every year).  Well, this is not totally unrelated to fly fishing.  This summer I am traveling to Montana for the first time to fish in Yellowstone Park.  Whoo hoo!  Excitement abounds.  However, I know that one of the creeks I want to fish is a 4.5 mile hike in and out and I also know that right now I am just not up to it in any way physically.  It’s not because I have a physical disability.  It’s because I am just plaint out of shape.

So I got to thinking about this expensive trip that I am taking and how not being in shape is going to limit some of my potentially cool fishing experiences.  So time to dust off the treadmill and do some squats.  Annoying?  It just brings up the point that fly fishing is an actual sport that can require some physical training depending on your interests.

It’s totally okay to want to be able to drive creek side and still see your car from the water from yards away.  That’s what I’ve been doing for years.  I’m just saying that even wading in those streams with easy access takes some flexibility and coordination.

So, think about the New Year and how getting into better physical shape may actually increase your enjoyment of our great sport! ~ Kristen
