Guided Smallmouth Bass Trips Curtis Wright OutfittersCurtis Wright Outfitters
The Smallmouth bass are finicky right now as a result of the below average temperatures WNC has been seeing.  Never the less, on the days where temperatures have reached the mid 60′ to 70’s, the bite has been on.  One a recent trip last week, this 2lb. Smallmouth was taken on a white and black popper close to the bank, in deep water.   Several other fish in the 1.5-3lb. range were taken on black crayfish patterns and white streamers such as the Bellydancer, which we carry in the shop.  We have  a nice assortment of bass flies and lures in the shop or you can check out the online store.

When fishing topwater, you’ll need that extra “Ummph” to get those big poppers through the air.  A 9′ 8wt. rod (comparable to Scott “S” Series rods ),with floating line and a 10-14′, 6-14 lb. test leader is the ideal setup for casting your fly 70′ with accuracy.  Popper sizes have been ranging between 1/0-4 in various colors.

Temperatures are expected to range from 33 to 67 degrees this week.  The Smallmouth bite may turn on this week with the warmer temperatures.  We have been seeing some cold mornings like this one here (pictured).  Once the temperatures start getting into the 30’s for the season, the fish start acting lethargic and are often sitting down deep.  That doesn’t mean topwater should be ruled out.  Try taking several rods rigged differently.  This will help speed the process of elimination up if it isn’t obvious where the fish are feeding.  Click here for current weather.

Rod: Fast Action comparable to Scott “S” Series rods 9’ 6-8wt.

Leader: 9-12’ 2x-4x Florocarbon.

Vest:  A vest with a work station and plenty of room for big flies.  Fishpond Waterdance or comparable.
